FAQ

Is there a fee?
Services at the Student Counseling and Wellness Center are provided to all UMMC students free of charge, regardless of how many times you visit. However, we do not provide free treatment to any visiting students who are, for example, doing a rotation at UMMC.

What should I expect during my first visit?
The main goal of your first visit is for your provider to understand the reasons you have made your appointment and what goals you hope to accomplish during your visits. This initial visit is mainly for your provider to get to know you better and the visits to follow will be more therapeutic in nature. Please arrive 30 minutes early to fill out the necessary paperwork.

Who can use the Student Counseling and Wellness Center?
All UMMC students, regardless of their school (School of Medicine, School of Nursing, etc.) are eligible to use our services.

Can I be prescribed medication?
Being prescribed medication is not guaranteed, but is an option if your medical provider believes it is the best treatment plan for you.

Can you refill a prescription?
Prescription refills are available through SCWC, but you must be a current patient and must have been seen by the psychiatrist or Psychiatric Nurse Practitioner. Generally, we try to limit the number of prescription refills by providing enough medication to get you to your follow up appointment, but there are times that because of scheduling or unforeseen circumstances refills are needed. Situations requiring refills are handled on a case by case basis and options are generally discussed between provider and patient. If a patient has missed an appointment, they must reschedule a follow up before a refill prescription will be provided.

How can I place a medication refill request?
In order to obtain a medication refill from the SCWC, patients must request one by emailing or calling the SCWC office. After doing so they will receive a REDCap link via email where they will fill out a Medication Refill Request form.
Refill requests will be processed by our provider within one week. Students can anticipate refills on Wednesdays and Thursdays when the medication prescriber is available. It is recommended that refill requests are submitted in advance to account for this processing time

Do you provide ADHD evaluations?
We do not provide ADHD evaluations at the SCWC. If this is something you are interested in, your provider can work with you to find a resource for this in the community.

Do you offer telemental health services?
We do offer telemental health services. To meet with your provider virtually, you will need to be in a space where you can reasonably guarantee your confidentiality and that allows for your undivided attention during your appointment.
